The Problem

As Environmental Manager, Chris was responsible for ensuring that chemicals used on the site were stored correctly. Many of these chemicals were supplied in IBC (1,000L) containers, which were then housed on secondary containment bunds.

Many of these bunds had internal steel frames that were being eaten away by rust caused by the weather and the corrosive nature of the chemicals. As each frame deteriorated, the risk was that it would collapse, resulting in the IBC falling onto the side wall and splitting open – allowing hundreds of litres of chemical to escape into the environment.

The Solution

Hazero representatives visited Chris and inspected the bunds. They immediately recommended that they quickly phase the steel frame units out of service and replace them with dedicated Single IBC and Double IBC Spill Pallets made of 100% polyethylene.

The Outcome

With no steel componentry, the new units weren’t subject to corrosion. The new spill pallets could withstand both the elements and chemical contact for years with no serious impact.

As an added benefit, Chris discovered that the flat platforms on the top of each pallet ensured loading IBC units on and off was a much easier and low-risk task.
